What is an Apprenticeship?

An Apprenticeship is a structured programme of work based learning leading to a number of nationally recognised qualifications.

Apprenticeships can be undertaken in a wide range of occupational areas and HTP offer them in:

• Hospitality & Catering
• Retail
• Team Leading and Management
• Business Administration
• Customer Service

Working with an employer, you'll learn skills and build up knowledge as you go along. Obviously, as you are working you also get paid!

The Apprenticeship framework is made up of a number of qualifications including:

• A National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at Level 2 or 3
• Appropriate Industry Qualifications - eg Food Safety Certificate for Chefs
• Key Skills qualifications - Maths, English and IT (You may be exempt if you achieve grades C or above in GCSE Maths and / or English)
• Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) - this training will make you aware of the basics of Employment Law, Discrimination Acts and your responsibilities to both yourself and the company you work for.

How does an Apprenticeship compare to other qualifications?

The Apprenticeship programme is flexible in that you can generally start when you want and complete it at the speed you want to.

An Apprenticeship is equivalent to 5 GCSEs grades A - C and will generally take between 12 and 15 months to complete.

The progression from Apprenticeship would be onto an Advanced Apprenticeship. These are designed to take your training to a higher level and are aimed at developing the supervisors and managers of the future. Advanced Apprenticeships include a Level 3 NVQ, are equivalent to 2 A-levels and will take between 18 and 24 months to complete.

What is required from you?

You need to have a positive attitude and be:

• Serious about the job you want to do
• Committed to your work and training
• Reliable
• Realistic about the amount of work you may have to do
• Happy to work as part of a team and an individual able to use your own initiative

In return, the team at HTP will give you all the help and support you need to achieve your qualifications.
