CoVE FAQs

Isle of Wight Centre of Vocational Excellence in Hospitality & Catering Skills

What does CoVE stand for?

Centre of Vocational Excellence.

What is a CoVE?

A "CoVE" is an LSC funded programme directed from the DFES, and is designed to enhance the delivery of Vocational Skills across a wide range of job types, primarily to develop Level 3 qualifications, upgrading training facilities and equipment enabling a better and more realistic environment.

Why did we get a CoVE?

As part of a Government drive to improve skills levels, the Hospitality Industry has been identified as one area requiring this improvement. As the two main providers of Hospitality training on the Island, HTP (Lead) & the College formed a partnership, application for CoVE status was formalised in 2003, with FULL CoVE status granted in November 2004.

What does the CoVE offer?

The CoVE offers a unique opportunity for learners to develop their skills, in both a College and workplace environment. Diploma students in Year 1 study as a full time student in College obtaining an NVQ or equivalent at Level 1 in Food Preparation and Service, together with Key Skills. On completion of Level 1 learners can choose whether to progress onto Levels 2 & 3 in either Food Preparation or Service in the work place or at College. As part of the provision, a variety of short certificated courses will available through either the College or HTP.

Will the CoVE Facility be in direct competition to other Restaurants?

The development of the CoVE facility in the community will not be in direct competition to your business. Although it will operate on a commercial basis and the facility will employ full time staff, the whole purpose is to involve learners through off-job training. This will give them an opportunity to develop a wider range of menu ideas and service styles and enhance their skills to producing a better trained workforce for the whole Island. Any profits made by the restaurant must be put back into the training of Island people.

Who works at Albert Cottage?

Albert Cottage employs a number of permanent key staff. As part of their 'off job' training programme, learners will work on a rota into the facility, enabling them to obtain additional qualifications. The aim is to increase the skill levels across a wide range of hospitality areas and is to include managers, employers and their staff who wish to access short and qualification courses covering a range of topics.

How can my business benefit from the CoVE?

All courses offered through the CoVE whether at the College or HTP will be available to interested members of the public, hoteliers, employed staff and restaurateurs on the Island. They will enhance the skills level across the sector, and with the interest and qualification Courses available will produce a more qualified and knowledgeable workforce, transferring these skills to all establishments in which they work.
